This paper allows you to work independently under the supervision of a staff member to conduct an investigation on a topic of your choice. During the experience, you will develop specialised and/or practical knowledge related to an aspect of health, sport, or human performance. The nature of the investigation will depend on the purpose of the Directed Study and should be agreed upon with your supervisor.

The structure for the paper will be determined during the first meeting between the student and supervisor. A programme of activities should be planned for the duration of the semester (i.e. 12­ weeks plus Study Week) with a presentation scheduled in Study Week.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Work​ ​independently​ ​to:
    • Agree on the nature and scope of the investigation including a feasible timeline and grading criteria for the final presentation or its equivalent if different to that outlined.
    • Plan a programme of study that equates with a 300 level paper*
    • Establish a reading agenda related to the investigation.
    • Identify and engage with the skills necessary to complete the investigation.
    • Agree on a suitable format for the assessments.
